What is OHSAS ISO 18001?

The OHSAS ISO 18001 is an occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS) which has been designed to help businesses develop health and safety objectives and implement practices. The system provides a structured and methodical approach for identifying risks and then eliminating them.

The standard is compatible with EMS and other international management systems.

Employee safety must be a priority for every business. Reducing and eliminating workplace injuries should be a humane imperative but consistently working and healthy employees are also good business sense.

Businesses and enterprises who are committed to this approach can take advantage of ISO 18001 – International Organisation for Standard’s Occupational Health and Safety protocols.

Originally, ISO 18001 certification was a British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Compliance with it enabled organisations to demonstrate that they had a system in place for occupational health and safety. Sometimes referred to as OHSAS 18001 certification, organisations worldwide recognised the need to control and improve health and safety performance and to do so with occupational health and safety management systems.

OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Certification is an international standard which provides a framework to identify, control and decrease the risks associated with health and safety within the workplace. Implementing the standard will send a clear signal to your stakeholders that you view employee’s health and safety as a priority within your organisation.

Increasingly, larger numbers of organisations completed OHSAS 18001 certification. Employers were under increasing pressure to ensure that a rigorous health and safety policy was in place protecting employees against possible occupational risks and reducing the likelihood of accidents in the workplace. By planning ahead an organisation could also identify health and safety risks and conform to health and safety legislation.

By following guidelines with ISO 18001 certification this outcome became more readily achievable. OHSAS 18001 certification ensures health and well-being of employees, sub- contractors and the public – all desirable outcomes for maintaining a profitable and smooth running business.

The implementation of ISO 18001 creates minimisation of liability of employers through adoption of proactive rather than reactive controls.
