What is ISO 45001?

The ISO 45001 is an occupational health and safety management system (OHSAS) which has been designed to help businesses develop health and safety objectives and implement practices. The system provides a structured and methodical approach for identifying risks and then eliminating them.

The standard is compatible with EMS and other international management systems.

| More

The new International Standard on occupational health and safety has been provided by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use – provides a framework for workplace safety, allowing organisations to manage this key risk as part of their business processes.

Australia already has a robust and long-standing workplace health and safety legislative framework. ISO 45001 Australia will help to incorporate, where applicable, international standards into this Australian framework.

ISO 45001 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable an organisation to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill-health.

It would be expected that implementation of ISO 45001 in Australia would greatly benefit Australian businesses and provide a solid basis of understanding between Australian businesses and their international trading partners.

Workplace related injuries are costing Australian businesses up to millions of dollars each year. AS/NZS 4801 or ISO 45001 certified businesses follow safe practices and reduce the risk of workplace health and safety disasters. ISO 45001 (the most recent publication and internationally applicable) is fast becoming the standard of choice by Australian businesses. ISO 45001 Australia makes sense as it draws from the best practices of countries with varying workforce types and styles.

ISO 45001 means occupational health and safety management systems. In simple terms, it’s the new international standard for holding organisations and individuals responsible for safe work systems across global supply chains. The new legislation will provide a framework to reduce the number of work-related injuries.

If an Australian business trades with international companies ISO 45001 Australia makes perfect sense. As more businesses adopt ISO 45001 in Australia and OH&S procedures are continually upgraded you run the risk of being left behind in OH&S best practices and minimal standards and expectations.
